🕊️ The Wild Geese: Ireland’s Most Distinguished Departures

June 19, 2025

Limerick Wild Geese Festival 2025 – Thursday 3rd to Sunday 6th July

In 1691, following the signing of the Treaty of Limerick, approximately 14,000 Irish soldiers—under the command of Patrick Sarsfield—gathered their belongings, bid their homeland farewell, and set sail for France. This event became known as the Flight of the Wild Geese, marking a pivotal moment in Irish and European history.

These men, and the families who followed them, would go on to serve in armies across the continent, leaving a legacy that is still remembered (and quite rightly celebrated) today. Think of them as Ireland’s original international ambassadors—albeit with muskets instead of briefcases.

🇫🇷 The Wild Geese Festival: Limerick’s Elegant Salute to History

Revived with flair in 2019, the Limerick Wild Geese Festival is a vibrant tribute to this historic moment and the centuries-old connection between Ireland and France. Spearheaded by the ever-enthusiastic French Honorary Consul LoĂŻc Guyon, the festival weaves together lectures, re-enactments, art, cuisine, and music into one beautifully curated cultural celebration.

In 2025, festivalgoers can expect:

  • Insightful talks by historians who know their Sarsfields from their SĂ©guins

  • Authentic re-enactments (with more velvet and sabres than you might be used to)

  • A grand banquet that puts modern dinner parties to shame

  • Music, dancing, and possibly a goose reference or two

It’s Limerick’s most elegant history lesson—with wine.
