Visitor Experiences – Beyond the City

  • Adare - Renowned as one of Ireland's prettiest towns, Adare is designated as a heritage town by the Irish government. Soak up this picturesque village and sample some of its famous cuisine.
  • Lough Gur - Lough Gur Heritage Centre is a community run tourist attraction telling the story of 6,000 years of habitation in the Lough Gur area. From Neolithic house sites to medieval castles Lough Gur has monuments from every era and the heritage centre ensures that visitors get the history/folklore and archaeology of the area from trained guides.
  • Bunratty – Most famous for Bunratty Castle and its medieval banquets, this beautiful village offers many shops, restaurants and bars. The Blarney Woollen Mills store sells a wide selection of Irish gifts including Waterford Crystal, Beleek China, Irish Aran knit wear, jewellery, linen and tweeds.
  • Wild Atlantic Way – Limerick is an official gateway city to the WAW. The journey of a lifetime awaits along 2,500km of coastal road on the Wild Atlantic Way. Pack your bags, leave the everyday behind you and get ready to embrace the best of the west.
  • Ballyhoura – An area of undulating green pastures, woodlands, hills and mountains. The ancient and unspoilt landscape, an abundance of significant heritage sites thrilling outdoor activities and friendly people make it the perfect place to discover rural Ireland.
  • Curraghchase House – Beautiful and historic house built in 1657 by Vere Hunt. The building is today in ruins following a fire that destroyed the house in 1941. Despite its current state it is still worthy of a visit and attracts great numbers year round. The surrounding forest provides an additional reason to visit and is the perfect location for a leisurely stroll of an afternoon.
  • Killaloe - Killaloe, County Clare, and Ballina, County Tipperary are situated on the banks of the River Shannon, and best known as the birthplace of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland. These twin towns are amongst Ireland's most picturesque attractions and are linked by a 13 arch bridge.
  • Foynes - Although a relatively new town dating from the mid 1900’s, Foynes has a rich maritime and aviation history and was once the last port of call on the eastern shore of the Atlantic for flying boats as it became the centre of the aviation world from 1939 to 1945. Today Foynes has a world class Flying Boat Museum with exhibits a full size replica of the B314 flying boat, the town is also the birth place of the world famous Irish Coffee, which was first made here in 1942 for flying boat passengers.
  • Bruff – A town in the east of county Limerick, located on the old Limerick-Cork road. The town has a pretty streetscape with many traditional shop fonts.

  • The International Rugby Experience  -  A world class, fully interactive experience celebrating the game of rugby and everything it stands for in the heart of Limerick. This wonderful new edition to our beautiful Limerick City is on O'Connell Street, 3 minutes walk from the Bedford Townhouse..
  • Limerick City Gallery of Art - A museum with the best, and largest, contemporary art collection in the region. This historic building looks out over People’s Park.
  • Hunt Museum - A historic 18th-century former Customs house with one of Ireland’s largest private collections of art and antiquities, from Neolithic artefacts to works of art by the likes of Picasso and Yeats. The museum also runs walking tours during the summer months.
  • King John’s Castle - Not only is this one of the best preserved Norman castles in Europe with 800 years of history, but it also delivers possibly the best views of the River Shannon and surrounding city.
  • The Milk Market - A bustling weekend market, where music is played, delicious coffee is brewed, and mouth-watering food is sold. Here you’ll always find something to savour.
  • Limerick Museum - Established in 1916, the museum is the oldest local authority museum in the state and with nearly 60,000 objects and its aim is to collect, preserve and display objects that tell the story of Limerick and its people.
  • Treaty City Brewery - A newly opened visitor centre and microbrewery on Nicholas Street in the heart of the city’s medieval quarter. A must visit for a uniquely Limerick experience.
  • Peoples Museum - A museum located at No.2 Pery Square. The Peoples Museum aims to reflect the diverse lives of people, buildings and streets of the city. This museum showcases the electric and fascinating collection of items in the care of Limerick Civic Trust, as well as artefacts that are visiting us from elsewhere.
  • Dolans – Dolans is an award-winning traditional Irish Pub located on the Dock Road. There is a restaurant and three live music venues, The Warehouse, upstairs at Dolans and the Kasbah social club.
  • Nevsail – Nevsail Watersports and adventures run extreme sports and adventure activities throughout all of Ireland. Nevsails operates from the Hunt Museum in Limerick City, offering kayaking tours, lessons and outings for all ages and group abilities.

  • Bakehouse 22 – Located in the heart of the Medieval Quarter on Nicholas St. Bakehouse serves great food in a casual and friendly environment. The location is a perfect space to meet with a friend, read the paper or people watch on seating outside.
  • Green Onion– The green onion café serves breakfast, lunch and coffee. Freshly baked scones desserts and the best soups, salads and sandwiches.
